Keith Fullerton Whitman Unleashes 6 Hour "Dream House" MP3 for Free

KFW-dream_house_variations.jpegBoston-based musician, journalist, archivist, programmer, electronic music guru, professor, label owner, and all around nice guy Keith Fullerton Whitman has just released a 6+ hour MP3 of his Dream House Variations to the internet for absolutely free.

Originally released as a 4x cassette box set, the Dream House Variations began as loops created from samples taken by Keith at the 2008 No Fun Fest. These sounds were then fed through synthesizers and modified in various ways in order to create a number of permutations based upon the original sounds. The resulting chaos was then recorded through microphones that were placed near studio monitors, meaning that the acoustics of the room were involved in the sound of the final product. Each of the four cassettes were meant to be played simultaneously through different stereos with the listener acting as a kind of conductor. It's impossible that any two listeners would experience the music in the same way unless they were in the same room together. In fact, an infinity of musical experiences are available to each listener depending upon his environment, the cassette players used, volume controls, and a number of other factors.

That box set is a limited item, but is still available through Keith's Mimaroglu Music Sales website. If, however, you like downloading things for free and listening to music as the composer intended it, Keith's own 6 hour mix available through this link right here. Just click the MP3 at the top right side of the page to download it to your computer.

I assume that the title of this piece is derived from La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela's own Dream House project, which can still be found in New York City at 275 Church Street. It is a sound and light installation that combines tones generated from a mathematical principle with artwork, light shows, and sculpture. If you want to learn more about that, you can visit The MELA Foundation and read all about this incredible space and the work that went into it or check out Wikipedia for a brief synopsis of the Young/Zazeela album that carries the same name.
