While Nate Donmoyer may be best known as the drummer for Boston's favorite sons, Passion Pit, the local musician has a fledgeling side career as a producer and DJ. Donmoyer got his start DJ'ing in Boston with the Basstown crew (responsible for Make It New and Visions) and soon began releasing his own bass heavy tracks upon the world. After being signed to Ninja Tune, touring the world with Passion Pit, and remixing all of your favorite bands (Phoenix, Crystal Castles, and even Passion Pit), he is back in Boston this Thursday the 19th to play a special headlining set at Make It New over at the Middlesex Lounge. Check out a quick chat with Nate after the jump.

When did you move to Boston? What school did you go to up here?
In 2005 when i turned 18 to attend the berklee school of magic.

When did you start producing and DJ'ing? did you meet people in Boston doing similar things to what you were doing and did that motivate you at all?
I started producing when i was 13 and djing when i was 16. Two of my good friends I was in bands with were also drum n bass djs and I learned by hanging with them and covering for them when they had to take a bathroom break at house parties. By the time I got to boston, it took awhile to meet people that liked what I did because of the age limits at clubs and I wasn't clever enough to sneak in. when i started seeing the people playing at Phoenix Landing and Middlesex and Enormous Room and Milky Way, that's when I really started to get my eyes opened up, there are so many to name but i'll leave it that it was the residents at the clubs I found myself motivated by more than the big touring names.

How did you get involved with Passion Pit? Did your quick rise take you guys by surprise at all?
I was playing in a band called The Peasantry with Jeff, the bass player from Passion Pit, and we knew each other as local band friends and had played together a few times and when there were certain line-up changes we just happened to be asked to fill them. Its all been extremely surprising, everyday at least three times I find myself looking around wondering how this has happened, I think we all feel really lucky.

What's your favorite thing about boston (the city/scene/anything in general)? Least favorite?
My favorite thing is the camaraderie that's developed between local acts. I feel like when I first started getting to know the scene both on the dance side and the band side (and sometimes the dance band side...) that people were competitive in a hostile way. I think that just got too exhausting so people are giving newer acts more respect and pushing each other supportively. Least favorite is of course age limits and liquor laws.

Favorite upcoming bands from Boston right now? Anyone we should keep an eye out for?
pretty & nice, magic magic, the dirty dishes, stephen konrads, verb the adjective noun, emil & friends, mystery roar, truman peyote, and many more i can't think of fast enough!

What's your favorite dance/dj night in boston?
Anything Basstown does, anything Bassic throws, everything Hearthrob is, all that Shake 'em Down encompasses.

Any upcoming releases/collabs we should keep an eye out for?
I have Shuttle single coming out in the new year, and hopefully an album soon too. Some crazy stuff is in the works in the studio with the band and other artists coming up but I don't want to jinx anything. Right now tour rules everything around me. Can't complain. Can't complain.
