Mix Series #4 - DJ Codiac

weekly mix 3 - codiac.jpg

This week we've got a mix courtesy of DJ Codiac (Coleman Goughary), one half of former DJ duo Yes&No and founder of the awesome Drink Musik blog. This mix will test your speakers and subwoofers and probably make your neighbors hate you as Cole goes through the best of dubstep and bass from the past year. For the mix and an interview, check out more after the jump and you can check out Cole at the Enormous Room on February 21st for the Dub Wise night.

When did you start DJ'ing and what inspired you to keep at it?

I started DJing around the summer of '08, which is a little after I started getting into electronic music. I was in a band playing guitar before that and our drummer Gizzy got me hooked (probably when he showed me the James Holden remix of Nathan Fake's The Sky Was Pink....or Modeselektor's Hello Mom album). I guess what inspired me to keep at it was just wanting to be good at it. Also when I discovered dubstep in late '08 the sounds were new to me and got me really into it.

How was the mix put together?

This mix was done live on 2 technics 1210s with dubstep vinyl, recorded via phono-thru in Traktor Pro/Audio 8 DJ, then compressed a little in Peak Pro.

What are some tracks or albums that you've been really into lately? Any artists or DJs to keep an eye out for (either locally or national/international)?

Oh man here we go. Locally I give props to Coralcola, C-Dubs, Vice-T, Redfoxx, John Barera, Ghostdad and the whole Vermin St crew for musical taste and talent - watch out for any and all of them. On a broader scale, I would have to say my fav artists recently are Brackles, 2562, Modeselektor, Martyn, Shortstuff, Untold or any of the other dubstep/electronica producers who are really pushing experimentation. Tracks in particular...on the club side I would say N-Type's Envy is a smasher bc that bassline is epic, and Aardvarck's 1 from the Bloom 3 12" is really interesting...on the chiller side definitely all of Untold's and Pangaea's stuff, and a lot of the Low End Theory wonk and leftfield hip hop. I'm definitely feeling the funkyish club vibes coming from the Nightslugs crew. I was really into the whole "purple Bristol" sound for a hot second...but you can't listen to too much of that before getting tired...but it's still great to drop Joker or Gemmy into a mix. Check out the 2009 charts on our DrinkMusik blog for more fav tracks and albums. I'd say keep an eye on Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, James Blake, Joy Orbison, Bok Bok, L-Vis 1990, Untold, and anything from the Hemlock/Hotflush/HessleAudio/Hyperdub or Numbers labels ;P

Favorite thing about Boston?

Small and young

Least favorite thing about Boston?

No late nite trains, and not enough people like electronic music enough!! Don't get me wrong, there is definitely a movement of rapidly growing interest, which is excellent. And this New England Music Fest will do nothing but propel the movement. But Bristol in England for example is about the same size as Boston and there are so many labels and notable DJs from there that it's absolutely crazy. I hope Boston comes to fruition in the next few years.
