Words by Joseph Ransom

Next Saturday (July, 31), local indie good guys, The Grownup Noise, begin their fifth national DIY tour at The Lizard Lounge in Cambridge. The tour coincides with the release of new EP, "Shall We?" and will take the band the length and breadth of the country. Having not taken to the road since last summer, the Boston natives are, once again, ready to take off on an admirably self-organized and unique odyssey.
The Grownup Noise have a history of being a green-conscious outfit; transportation for their last tour was provided by a vegetable oil-fueled van, affectionately named Loraine. Sadly, due to exhaustion (if you'll pardon the pun), Loraine has since been put into retirement. The band's efforts to minimize their impact on the environment, however, still remain. This summer's epic road trip will be made in a soccer Mom-style mini van with enough room for some small amps, instruments, and a reduced line-up of three (rather than the usual four) travelling band members.

Touring without regular drummer, Aine Fujioka, will provide the challenge of bringing the band's full sound to the fifteen venues they will pass through over the next month. Rather than opting simplify things and play exclusively acoustic sets, Paul Hansen, Adam Sankowski, and Todd Martsen will impress crowds as they trade and share instrumental responsibilities. The revolving display of the trio's diverse musical proficiency promises to make for a satisfying live experience for audiences from here all the way to cities like Santa Cruz and Seattle.

Having predominantly performed material from the 2007 self-titled debut album on their last few tours, this time around The Grownup Noise will have brand new songs to introduce to the set list. The forthcoming EP, "Shall We?" features two acoustic numbers ("Six Foot Solemn Oath" and "So It Goes") which are exclusive to the short release and a further three which will help to comprise a new full-length, set to come out in January of next year. For these new works, the skillful help of producer/musician, Scott Solter has been enlisted. Solter has worked with the likes of Spoon and St. Vincent and brings the same kind of freshly mixed gleam of those artists to this EP. On the record's two fairly straight forward acoustic songs, front man, Hansen displays a similar vocal range to that of Ben Gibbard and, occasionally, lyrics with the same manner simplistic yet beautiful cynicism as those crafted by Mike Kinsella ("I'll pick a side that no one is on" from "So It Goes," for example). The standout from the new release, however, it's the opening track, "Strawmen." Keys, strings, soft high-hat clashes and Hansen's melodic voice flourish together excellently on the track; signaling that the next year's full length will have more than a sprinkling of diverse and cleverly formulated sounds.

Last year, just hours after a semi-disastrous breakdown which led to a run in with a perturbed Taco Bell employee, the involvement of local authorities, and a significant loss of vegetable oil fuel, The Grownup Noise managed to arrive on time for a show in Santa Cruz, CA. The farcical tale from the tour is testament to the band's passion for performing live. Booking venues all over the country for themselves has helped to steadily build a something of a national following of both fans and fellow musicians. Now, with a body of fresh material to showcase and a sophomore record on the way; the 2010 edition of The Grownup Noise on the road adventure, could well be the most successful to date.

The lyrical wit of veteran performer, David Dondero, the continued success of local favorites, Mean Creek, and a coming out party for a rejuvenated, The Love Language, were all displayed at times last night.
The evening kicked off with the rolling and rambling folk offerings of Minnesotan, David Dondero. Despite a lack of the NPR-listening, red wine-drinking demographic which Dondero's sound seems most befitting of, the 41 year-old's songs received the respect they deserved. The fairly thin crowd, who had arrived early enough to catch the opener's set, was treated to tracks from the Dondero back catalogue, which has influenced the likes of Conor Oberst and Willie Mason.

A few songs from the forthcoming album, "# Zero with a Bullet" (out on August 3rd), including the particularly soothing traveler's tune "Wherever You Go," were also showcased. The wry, self-deprecating title of Dondero's upcoming release pretty well sums up the solo artist's lyrical style. Lines like "here's to your cold sore lips/here's to your circus ride hips" from the crowd pleasing "Pornographic Love Song," demonstrate why Dondero is so well revered by other songwriters with a similar knack for holding a magnifying glass over the more blemished areas of love and life.

Unfortunately, however, in a venue where the sound is not always of Dolby quality, playing to a trickled-in audience of people preparing to see two electric guitar-heavy up and coming bands; Dondero's half an hour set began to teeter towards monotony by it's climax.

Following David Dondero and ready rile up the half full venue were Boston quartet, Mean Creek. The band currently brims with a justifiable confidence off the back of a recent groundswell of local support, manifested by a recent appearance on the cover of The Boston Phoenix and the bestowment of the publication's "Boston's Best Act" title. Earlier this month the two-song 7" featuring the songs "Liar/Thief" and the EP's title track "The Comedian" was released. Both new songs were well received last night. "The Comedian," in particular seems to be a new gem that the band is proud to show off. The song was used to close the set and, despite (or possibly because of) it's similarities to The Raconteurs' "Blue Veins," signals that Mean Creek is a band with legitimate aspirations of moving from the cover of The Phoenix to that of The NME.

Songs like "The Sky (Or The Underground)" and "Face Of The Earth" have enough of moments of robust, wailing guitar and pounding drums to be appreciated by anyone who has ever had the urge to close their eyes and overtly nod their head at a live show. The times at which Mean Creek really pricked their audience's attention, however, were when they opted to move feet rather than melt faces. Tracks such as "It's Good To Be Back Again," in which, multi-talented, Aurore Ounjian was called upon to add her harmonica to a more up-tempo riff and front man, Chris Keene harmonized instead of hollered, provided the most jovial moments of the evening for both the crowd and the band.

Mean Creek are a band that can, have, and will continue to headline bigger shows than last night's appearance in Cambridge. At this time of year, in particular, their sound seems tailor made to be heard stretching over a festival field rather than filling up a dark room.

Raleigh, NC natives, The Love Language filled the top of Wednesday's bill at TT's. The five-piece released their second full length album, "Libraries," this week and were in a celebratory mood as they took to the new material to the stage last night. "We're just really damn proud of it," singer/guitarist, Stuart McLamb told the crowd; the polished nature of their set would suggest they are a band that have worked hard enough to allow themselves a pat on the back.

Opening with the shuffling and melodic "Stars" before swiftly kicking things up a notch with "Lalita," The Love Language established their ability to produce quality pop from a somewhat sporadic melting pot of sounds and influences. Crisp, sometimes blissful, keys, played by Missy Thangs, blended well with BJ Burton and Stuart McLamb's hazy, lo-fi guitar sound. Songs ranged from delicate, building, Arcade Fire-esque attempts at the epic to the Motown-influenced "Summer Dust."

For much of the new release, McLamb has apparently turned away from the distorted electric sound that featured heavily on The Love Language's debut release. The front man opts for an acoustic over an electric guitar on a number of the new songs; a choice justified by the brilliant slice of summer pop, "Heart To Tell." The single prompted some interesting attempts at swing dancing in certain parts of the crowd.

Closing the show, the band slowed things down with "Wilmot," which is also featured on the new album. The ballad moves from a solo acoustic effort with some fairly benign lyrics to a rumbling, orchestral climax with the whole band singing melodic "ooh's." Like much of what The Love Language produce, in theory, the song shouldn't work; somehow, however, it all makes sense.

Dance bands Neon Indian and Telephoned are opening for the Boston show.

I was able to chat with P-Thugg while the guys were touring through Serbia. We talked about music, dancing, and "being cool."

        Interview by Jen Brown

OAF: So you guys are always dancing in your music videos and performances. Where did you guys learn to dance? What's your favorite dance move?

C: Well in the "Night by Night" video, we had a double...we're not professional dancers, but we like to dance on stage. My favorite dance move would be the electric slide, or the funky chicken, or the running man (check out Will Smith doing his own version here). There are a lot of good moves.

OAF: Duos in the public eye often fulfill certain roles and personalities. Other than what's obvious and what the fans might see, how do you guys complement each other?

C: We complement each other personally as far as our character goes and the way we are and also the way we do things. Dave's very neurotic and stressed out. I'm really laid back and relaxed. It's that way whether it's about music or girls...but professionally we complement each other too. Musically, I think we have different capabilities that work together. Dave plays and guitar sings. I'm a horrible singer, but I can spot harmonies and play the talk box.

OAF: Who would you guys be if you were a different duo in the movies or on TV?

C: The Blues Brothers...the tall guy and the short guy. Or Bill and Ted.

OAF: Was there ever a thought of adding more guys to the band? Is it harder or easier to have two people?

C: Well production-wise, it's easier. Usually, even if it's a bigger band, it's always one or two guys who do most of the work. The rest of the guys are just in the band. Songwriting-wise, it's harder to have more people involved. Specially with touring, it's way easier with two people--we can have really distinct objectives. And then on the stage, it's more powerful having two people trying to take over the crowd of 500 to 20,000 people at festivals.

We also tried hiring musicians. Like four of five years ago, we had a full band, but it wasn't really working...it was weird. After that we had a drummer, and that was still kind of weird because everyone was asking, "Who's the third guy? Is he in Chromeo, is he not?" And so we started to play shows, just the two of us, and it worked really well. At the end of the day, people wanna see me and Dave...they don't wanna see us chatting with a drummer.

OAF: So you guys grew up together and have known each other for a long time--are there more people on the Chromeo team you have known for awhile?

C: Well, it's two of us doing the songs and Dave's brother helps us sometimes with some stuff. We've known Tiga for a long time. He was the one who signed us. He's part of the family.

OAF: So your website says you've never been afraid of "looking uncool." Can you describe what you mean by that?

C: Well, you know, you're never uncool with the way you look. It's about your attitude. You can wear anything. You can be tall and nerdy with glasses, or you can be short...you know, whatever you look like, you can always be cool--that's basically it. It's all about how you present yourself. You know, when someone enters a room, you can feel what the person's about right away--you can feel it. If a person likes who he is, that's what's cool.

OAF: You have pretty unique and crazy music videos. Which video do you get the most feedback on?

C: Probably "Bonafied Lovin." A lot of people like "Momma's Boy," too.

OAF: How do you choose how to pursue the visions for your videos? Is it the same process for every video?

C: It's different. We work with different directors--we try to change things up. Usually the producer will have an idea and we'll work with it. There's some stuff that we never want to lose control of. It's always a discussion between the producer and us. If there's a shot we don't like, we tell them to take it out.

We just finished shooting a new video [with Keith Schofield] for the single, "Don't Turn the Lights On." We shot it in Los Angeles and are in the editing and approval stage now...like, "I don't like my face in this shot!"

OAF: Haha, you guys have quite a bit of sarcasm/humor in your music...what role do you think humor plays in music in general, or in entertainment--an example being the "Momma's Boy" track.

C: Well you know, we try to keep a balance between humor and not becoming a joke band. We try to keep a certain level of humor in our music.

OAF: Yeah, I can imagine it's a pretty hard thing to do...

C: It is, and we really have to push ourselves musically and prove to people we are able to play good music at the same time...you know, cause then you can allow yourself to be funny. But it's a fine line between being funny and being too funny, and we're trying to walk on the line the best we can. We don't want to be too serious, but we don't want to be too jokey--just enough to make you smile and maybe make you laugh.

OAF: Yeah, that's exactly how it is. I've never seen or talked to any musician who has had that same ability that way.

C: Yeah, we try to make sure we don't become 'haha' funny.

OAF: Right. Okay, last question--favorite Jackson album?

C: Favorite Jackson album? "Bad."

Chromeo will be playing at the House of Blues on July 30. brought their distorted beach punk sound to Great Scott Tuesday night. The
gig marked the band's first show of their US tour, giving the Allston
crowd an early chance to hear material from the forthcoming album King of the Beach (due out August 6).
In
addition to the new songs, Wavves fans may also have been anxious to
see if lead singer, Nathan Williams, had fully recovered from the
well-publicized "on-stage meltdown" he suffered at last year's
Primavera Sound Festival in Spain. The episode put an end to the band's
European tour and resulted in a spilt between Williams and former
drummer, Ryan Ulsh. Last night, however, any questions over the
stability of the front man and his new line up were quashed early on.
Diving straight into the fresh material with the title track from King of the Beach, the Californian trio had the Allston bohems immediately moshing.

Upon
first listen, tracks from Wavves' second release seem to possess a more
accessible tempo and catchier hooks than much of their previous work.
"Post Acid," the first single from the new record, is a song worthy of
any SoCal summer playlist; the track galvanized the crowd like nothing
else on the set list. The single's sun-kissed guitars and
shout/punch-a-long chorus were befitting of the hot weather and the
sweaty venue; "I'm just having fun with you," sang Williams and the
sentiment was reciprocated.

Wavves' new rhythm section,
comprised of Stephen Pope (bass) and Billy Hayes (drums), both of whom
formerly played as part of the late Jay Reatard's band, complemented
Williams well. Hayes, in particular, built a nice rapport with the
audience with a few one-liners and observational anecdotes about the
Allston neighborhood. As well as being a drummer with personality,
Hayes also demonstrated he was one who possessed some pretty tight
skills. His time keeping on the drum-heavy, "Friends Were Gone,"
sounded particularly crisp as it popped out over Great Scott's compact
dance floor. Following "Friends," the band slipped into the
grunge-meets-shoe gaze ballad, "Weed Demon." This allowed the pushers
and shovers at the front some momentary respite and gave the band a
chance to visit their more traditional psychedelic side.

After a
quick bathroom break, the show was rounded out nicely with an
unrehearsed but well received version of Wavves' debut single "Beach
Demon." The distorted, grinding, up-tempo encore sent the masses
bouncing from the venue onto a humid Commonwealth Ave with a fitting
soundtrack for the boozy walk home ringing in their ears.

Upon
the evidence of Tuesday night, Nathan Williams and the Wavves'
re-jigged line up have put any self-destructive behavior of the past
behind them and are ready to enjoy showcasing new material, continuing
to make sweaty indie youth dance.

OAF: From Ohio! How nice. Seems like every buzz band is from Brooklyn these days. How's Ohio?

CN: Ohio's swell. Can't really speak for the whole state though because
I guess that giant Jesus statue just burned down in southwest Ohio, but
up here in Cleveland everything is not on fire usually.

OAF: How's touring with Wavves going? How did the tour come about? What's your favorite city to play in?

Wavves asked if we could open for them for this little week-long tour
and of course we said yes. And my favorite city to play in is Boston
because it's where you are from <3.

OAF: Why is Justin Bieber your first Myspace friend? You guys a fan?

CN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLuOQP-Byjg&feature=related

OAF: How do you guys differentiate yourself from other indie lo-fi bands?

CN: Only one of us wears skinny jeans.

OAF: I read about how you guys formed the name "Cloud Nothings"...what
were the other names you came up with that you decided against?

CN: I don't really remember so I just used one of those band name
generator websites and got some names that I'll pretend we were
thinking about: Taking Chimp, Passing Suspects, Scary Streak, and Bull
Avenger.

OAF: What did you guys do before Cloud Nothings?

CN: Before cloud nothings there was a formless void.

OAF: What was the band's progress like until today? What's the biggest obstacle you guys have faced?

CN: Until today there was actually no progress. Today is the start of something wonderful and new!

OAF: Do you want to get signed? How do you feel about the record industry nowadays?

CN: My uncle actually works at Geffen Records and he says that all this
stuff about lower sales is just a sick marketing ploy to get people to
buy more records. Sick like rad, not sick like disgusting. He's a cool
uncle, y'know.

OAF: You guys need a Wikipedia site.

CN: You are free to make one and base everything on it off of the information gleaned in this interview.

OAF: Do you know anything about the Boston band, Young Adults, you're playing with? (We like them.)
Touring band Kaiser Cartel and local musician Vikesh Kapoor opened.
Messersmith took the stage by 10 p.m. and played a solo set that varied
greatly from the full-band sets he plays for some shows, including the
successful concert he played at this year's SXSW in March. Cracking
Patton Oswalt jokes and answering questions about his fellow Minnesotan
resident Prince, Messersmith pulled the night's set off flawlessly,
turning his most instrumentally complex songs into charming acoustic
melodies.

The musician started the set with the 2006 song "7:02," in which he
layered guitar backing over an electronic looper to accompany his lead
guitar and vocals. He then played the catchy, more energetic song
"Novacain," which he released off the same album, before he began
tracks off Reluctant Graveyard.

The first new song he played off the new album was "Dillinger Eyes," a
song with a 60's vibe and layered/looped percussion. "Organ Donor," followed, along with "Toussanint Grey,
First in Life and Death," and "A Girl, A Boy, and A
Graveyard" (an audience request).

He then sprang into "Franklin Avenue," "Dayjob," and "Beautiful
Children," three older tracks that are popular amongst Messersmith
fans. All of the songs stuck to the "less is more," mentality.
Messersmith doesn't try to confuse his audience with mysteriousness and
ambiguity. He instead offers them beautiful, thoughtful songs, and the
crowd receives them gladly.

After "Beautiful Children," one could have assume Messersmith leads a
melancholy, lonely life. This however, is not the case, as he informed
the audience that he missed his wife while touring and proceeded to
play a Valentine's Day song that he wrote for her years ago. "I kind of
miss my wife," he told his fans.

The artist then played four more songs in his set, including a delicate Beatles
cover of the song "Norwegian Wood" and an older electronic song,
"Miracles." Messersmith thanked the crowd and offered them all free
electronic copies of his album. Apparently the previous night's show in
Brooklyn wasn't as welcoming and Messersmith appreciated the more-excited Boston audience.

Well, Messersmith, we appreciated you.
Messersmith's tour will continue through the end of June. For tour

Words by Joe Difazio

Wednesday night The National played the House of Blues Boston, backing
their latest album, High Violet. Their set borrowed heavily from the
fifth full length. High Violet
is a gorgeous album of indie pop ballads, as a whole the record is
quietly epic. Horns and strings swirl around the baritone of singer
Matt Berninger crooning about depressing adult tragedies. To emulate such an album live would prove to be a difficult task, but one that the band indeed accomplished.
The National managed
to capture the big sound they had on the record. They brought in a horn
section to compliment their sweeping delay-soaked guitars and addictive
drum beats. The most entertaining part of the show was Matt Berninger
as he alternated between sauntering around the stage with a large glass
of wine and fidgeting excitedly somewhere between the microphone and
the drums.

The older crowd was relatively dead, only lighting
up when Berninger jumped off stage during the encore and ran all the
way to the back the House of Blues, to the chagrin of the tech guy and
the rest of the band. Only flaws of the show were that the band's rendition of "Fake Empire" (The single off their
last album Boxer, and Obama theme song) was melodically off and that bassist Scott
Devendorf never took off his sunglasses--(Does he think he 's Corey
Hart?) Besides that, The National killed it. After eleven years, the band has
perfected a charming and gigantic live show.

2nd Opinion by Jen Brown:

The National also sold out the House of Blues on Thursday night. The
band played many of their older songs from a range of albums, including
the songs "Cherry Tree," "Abel," and "About Today." Berninger exuded
the same energy the second night, clearly exhibiting a love for live
performance.

Although he drank heavily throughout the show, Berninger never faltered
on any line or any note. The rest of the guys were also dead on and
played the nearly two-hour set quite flawlessly--the highlight was when
violinist Padma Newsome played center stage against the horns during
the last song.

The band left the audience with no question as to whether they're ready
for all the buzz they've generated. They're still humble and excited to
be heard.
the seniors and the random summer kids who will be sticking around.
Graduation is of course just around the corner...

The night before graduation, Club Rise is hosting a strong lineup with the Canadian DJ, Lazy Rich (check out his Weapon of Choice remix), with opening acts Repeat Offenders, Death Star, and Nooka Jones.
Nooka is a BU student who has really gained attention and respect in
the Boston music scene over the last year. His shows have doubled, as
well as his fan base. Because he's graduating and will be leaving
Boston soon, this is one of the best nights to see him in action.

The night is 18+ and there is no dress code. Rise is a private club. Email mike@riseclub.us for a guestlist spot.

Doors are at 1 a.m. (Friday night/Saturday morning).

Be there!
